$26M to help construct new Extendicare long-term care home in Stittsville

By Mike Vlasveld

Stittsville is getting a new long-term care home, thanks to an injection of $26,594,560 from the Government of Ontario.

The funding is part of a new provincial model that aims break down historic barriers and accelerate the construction of urgently-needed long-term care projects.

Extendicare Stittsville says the new facility will create 256 new long-term care spaces.

“Extendicare will be investing approximately $80-million to build this new home,” says Dr. Michael Guerriere, President and Chief Executive Officer of Extendicare. “The additional government funding will help make it possible to get this project moving. Our new long-term care home in Stittsville will feature state-of-the-art design standards to meet the current and future needs of seniors. This project is a part of Extendicare’s plan to replace all of our older long-term care homes in the province.”

“The number of people in Ottawa who will need long-term care is expected to increase significantly over the next decade,” said Carleton MPP Goldie Ghamari. “The work underway here in Stittsville will make sure that our loved ones will have a comfortable, modern place to live, near family and friends, with the support they need, when they need it.”

“This project will bring new construction jobs to our community and ongoing employment for many full time employees at the long term care facility,”  said Glen Gower, City of Ottawa Councillor for Stittsville. “It also helps to complete a planned cluster of services and housing on Hazeldean Road for our aging popluation.”

As of June 2020, more than 38,500 people were on the province-wide waitlist to access long-term care beds.

The Ontario government's funding model adds $761-million overall, to build and renovate 74 long-term care homes across the province.
