A spokesperson for Quebec's Ministry of Health and Social Services says an investigation is underway after reports of a woman passing away after being made to wait on the floor of Hull Hospital's emergency department lobby.
The woman was suffering from extreme stomach pains on the evening of June 27, according to a Radio-Canada report, and could no longer sit in her waiting room chair. But instead of offering her a bed or stretcher, hospital staff members gave her a couple of blankets to be able to lie on the floor.
The patient was eventually rushed to Gatineau Hospital for an emergency procedure but did not make it.
The ministry says the Centre intégré de santé et des services sociaux (CISSS) de l'Outaouais has launched an investigation into the death “in order to shed light on the events and make the necessary corrections, if necessary.”
“Please be aware that we are concerned about this situation,” writes the CISSS de l'Outaouais in a translated statement to CityNews Ottawa. “We are doing everything we can to understand what happened and to prevent this kind of situation from happening again.”
The ministry spokesperson adds, “Our thoughts are first with that person's loved ones.”
CityNews Ottawa has been told there will be no further comment on the matter at this time.
