Ottawa’s medical officer of health, Dr. Vera Etches, and Ottawa Public Health (OPH) have both been presented with the keys to the city for their efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Etches and the staff became the leading voice in the local response to the pandemic, and as a recognition of their efforts, were rewarded with the key in a ceremony held on Thursday, June 9.

“These last couple of years have been utterly relentless when it comes to crisis after crisis,” Etches said. “Yet, I continue to be inspired when I see members of the community coming together to support one another.”

During the event at Ottawa’s City Hall, several community leaders come out to show their support as Mayor Jim Watson presented Etches and her team with the keys.

Multiple notable names also provided video congratulations, including Canada’s top doctor, Dr. Theresa Tam, comedian Colin Mocherie and actor Ryan Reynolds (a.k.a. Ottawa’s “Bruce the intern”).

“That is a huge honour and I am so, so, so excited for each and every one of you,” Reynolds said. “I also just want to let you know that I was recently honoured by the City of Ottawa with the giant golden lock hole.”

Watson said the keys to the city recognize Etches as a steadfast and respected expert aiming to keep the people of Ottawa safe.

This isn't the first time Reynolds has lent his support to Etches and Ottawa.

During the pandemic, the Hollywood actor, who used to call Vanier home, donated funds to Ottawa's Food Bank, the Distress Centre of Ottawa and other organizations.
