Toronto-area driver needs to find a way home after stunt driving in Ottawa

Police impounded a driver’s car after catching them driving well above the speed limit, however, they were not from the city.
Officials shared the story in a post on X after an officer caught the vehicle flying down Highway 417 on April 30. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the driver was going 158 km/h on the highway, automatically prompting a stunt driving charge.
This means their licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days. They face a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition if convicted. The driver, who police say is from the Greater Toronto Area, now has to find an alternate way home.

Police also caught a second driver going the same speed shortly after.
Earlier the same day, another officer stopped a vehicle on Highway 417 after an Automatic Licence Plate Recognition Software (ALPR) notification popped up on the cruiser’s dash.
The message was for an expired permit. When stopped, the driver ended up only having a G1 licence, which cannot be used to drive on a 400-series highway in Ontario. There was no other driver with them, so the person was charged and the vehicle was towed back to their residence.
