Humidifier suspected in Kanata crib fire

OTTAWA — As investigators probe a Kanata house fire that spread to a toddler’s crib as the family slept, suspicion is zeroing in on the humidifier in the little boy’s bedroom.

The toddler is being treated at CHEO for severe burns to his face and limbs, after his crib caught fire early Wednesday morning.

A family friend tells 1310 NEWS, the little boy’s father suspects the fire began in a humidifier in his son’s room.

Investigators with Ottawa Fire and the Ontario Fire Marshall were at the home, Wednesday, looking into the fire. Two appliances were removed from the home, but investigators have yet to confirm the cause of the fire.

The boy’s father credits a working smoke detector with waking his family up and getting everyone out of the burning house, likely saving their lives.

A cousin of the little boy’s mother has set up a Gofundme page for the family, to help the family rebuild and, “support any help they may need through this hard time.”

The page has set a goal of $5,000 and was more than halfway there, early Thursday morning.
