Third dead person found in Ottawa waterway in a week

EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated there were two ongoing cases.
Police launched another investigation after a kayaker found a dead person in the Rideau River on Sunday afternoon.
Officials said in a post that the body was located just north of Smyth Road. The operation to retrieve the person started around 1:30 p.m. Police said they have not identified the person and will be in communication with their family first.

“We will provide an update when we are able to release details to the public,” Ottawa Police Service said in a post. “At this time, there is no indication of foul play.”
This is the third person to be found dead in an Ottawa waterway in the last several days.
On April 27, officials responded to Dick Bell Park on Carling Avenue in the city’s west end after someone reported a dead person in the Ottawa River. Police later confirmed the person is Vanshika Saini, who is in her 20s and an international student from India.
“Throughout this investigation, the OPS has maintained open and ongoing communication with Vanshika’s family,” police said. “We are aware of concerns being raised within the community regarding how this case was handled.”
The Saini family has released a statement through Ottawa police. In part, it reads, “We are heartbroken by the loss of our beloved daughter, Vanshika. She was a bright light in our lives – kind, compassionate, and full of potential. Her absence leaves a void that can never be filled. We will carry her in our hearts always.”

The family also wants to thank the broader Indo-Canadian community for their support and prayers saying it means a “great deal.”
They also ask people refrain from sharing unofficial details and request space to grieve in peace.
The second person was found dead near Bates Island, near Island Park Drive in the Ottawa River. Police say there is no indication of foul play in the investigation.
“If additional information becomes available that can be shared, we will provide an update,” officials said.
