Stunt driver caught travelling 161km/h as snow fell on Ottawa highway

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are issuing a warning about stunt driving speeds paired with slick, snowy roads.

In a post on social media, the force noted that an officer caught a vehicle travelling well above the speed limit on Highway 417 just as snow was beginning to fall in the nation’s capital.

Police said the driver was going 161 km/h near Kinburn Side Road just after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The driver was issued an immediate 30-day licence suspension, a two-week vehicle impound and faces a $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving suspension upon conviction.

“These speeds are very dangerous with normal driving conditions, but could prove disastrous during poor weather,” police said in the post.

Shortly after this, a crash happened in the west end of the city, leaving a female in her late teens in serious condition.

Officials are continuing to warn people from driving hazardously as more snow makes its way to Ottawa. Each winter storm that passes, dozens of vehicles end up in ditches or collide across the city, as officials plead for people to stay off the roads.
